法文(fǎ wén) - French, the French language in Mandarin

法文 (fǎwén) is French, the language, following the same pattern as 英文 (Yīngwén), English: the country's short name, here 法 (fǎ) from 法国 (Fǎguó), France, plus 文 (wén), "language, writing".

You will also meet 法语 (fǎyǔ) for the same thing, on the same 语 (yǔ) versus 文 (wén) split seen with English. Either is fine in speech; course titles and textbook covers lean towards 法语, while 法文 turns up more in phrases about menus, labels and written material, matching 文's slight bias towards the written form.

Watch the tone on 法 (fǎ): third tone, the same as in 办法 (bànfǎ), "method", not to be confused with 发 (fā), first tone, "to send, to develop", which shows up in a completely different set of words.
