广告 (guǎng gào) covers the whole English family of advert, advertisement and commercial. A television spot, a billboard, a small ad in a paper and a banner on a website are all 广告.
For the activity rather than the object, Chinese uses a verb plus the noun: 做广告 (to advertise, literally to make an advert) and 打广告 in more colloquial speech. There is no separate verb, so a sentence like 我们要做广告 is how you say "we need to advertise".
The tone pair is worth drilling. Third then fourth, guǎng gào, with a dip and then a drop. Learners often flatten the first character towards a first tone, which pushes it towards 光 and muddles the word.
