环境(huán jìng) - environment, surroundings; setting, conditions in Mandarin

环境 (huán jìng) covers both meanings English splits between "the environment" and "surroundings". 保护环境 is the green sense; 学习环境 or 工作环境 is the everyday sense of the conditions you sit in.

It is a broad, slightly abstract noun, so it takes an adjective in front more often than not: 安静的环境, 干净的环境, 环境很差. On its own with no modifier it usually means the natural environment.

The trap is using it where English would say "place". 环境 is the character of a place, not the place itself. For the location you want 地方 (dì fang): 这个地方很安静 says the spot is quiet, 这里的环境很安静 says the conditions there are.
