黄(huáng) - yellow in Mandarin

黄 (huáng) means yellow. Like every colour word in Mandarin it behaves as a stative verb: as a predicate it wants a degree adverb, so 这朵花很黄 (zhè duǒ huā hěn huáng), this flower is very yellow, is natural, while a bare 这朵花黄 sounds clipped and comparative rather than descriptive.

Before a noun you will more often meet the fuller form 黄色 (huángsè), literally "yellow colour": 黄色的夹克 (huángsè de jiākè), a yellow jacket, is what you hear most in speech, though a plain 黄夹克 is also understood.

黄 (huáng) carries weight beyond the colour itself. 黄河 (Huánghé), the Yellow River, is named for the silt that colours its water, and 黄色 (huángsè) doubles as slang for pornographic or explicit content, so context decides which sense is meant.
