机器人 (jī qì rén) is a robot, from industrial arms on a production line to the toy that talks back. It is a transparent coinage, machine plus person, built in the twentieth century to carry the imported concept, and it reads that way to a Mandarin speaker too.
The word has stretched with the technology. 机器人 now covers software bots as well as metal ones, so a chatbot is 聊天机器人 and a search crawler is a 爬虫机器人. Used of a human being it is an insult about being mechanical and unfeeling, the same jab English makes.
Note that the middle syllable is a fourth tone, 器 qì, and it is the same 器 as in 武器 (weapon) and 容器 (container), where it means implement or vessel. Do not let it drift towards 气 qì (air, breath). Different character, different meaning, and mixing them turns your robot into something closer to a machine-fart.
