桔子(jú zi) - orange, tangerine (mandarin orange) in Mandarin

桔子 (júzi) is the small, easy-to-peel citrus fruit English calls a tangerine or mandarin orange, and by extension it is also the everyday word Chinese speakers reach for when they just mean "orange". 橘子 (júzi) is the more formal spelling with 橘 (jú) instead of 桔 (jú), and the two are pronounced identically and used interchangeably in speech.

The measure word is 个 (gè) for one piece of fruit, and a whole bag or box takes 袋 (dài) or 箱 (xiāng): 一个桔子 (yí gè júzi) for one, 一袋桔子 (yí dài júzi) for a bag.

It is a winter fruit in China in a way it is not quite in Britain: 桔子 (júzi) is strongly associated with Chinese New Year, when crates of them appear in every shop because the word 桔 (jú) sounds close to 吉 (jí), lucky, making the fruit a small edible good-luck charm as well as a snack.
