举行 (jǔ xíng) is the verb for staging an occasion: a meeting, a wedding, a match, a ceremony, an election. It is the register of news reports and notice boards, so it turns up in nearly every announcement a learner will read.
The object has to be an event, and the pattern is usually place or time first: 在北京举行, 明天举行. The passive reading needs no marker, because 会议举行 already means the meeting is held rather than the meeting holds something.
The trap is reaching for it socially. You do not 举行 a night out or a casual party; that is 开派对 or just 请客. And you never 举行 an object. Holding a cup is 拿, holding a baby is 抱.
