客厅 (kètīng) is the "lounge" or "living room": 客 (kè) means "guest" and 厅 (tīng) means "hall, room", so it literally reads as "guest hall", the room where visitors are received.
It is the social heart of a Chinese home, usually holding the sofa and television, and it is where 客人 (kèrén), "guests", are shown to first rather than straight into a bedroom or the 饭厅 (fàntīng), "dining room".
Compare it with 卧室 (wòshì), "bedroom", which is private, while the 客厅 (kètīng) is the room a household is happy for outsiders to see.
