凉快(liáng kuai) - cool, pleasantly cool in Mandarin

凉快 (liángkuai) describes weather or air that is pleasantly cool, the comfortable end of "cold" rather than the uncomfortable end. It carries none of the harshness of 冷 (lěng, cold); a room, an evening or a shady spot can all be 凉快 (liángkuai) in a way that sounds welcome, not unpleasant.

Note the second syllable: 快 loses its tone here and is pronounced with a neutral, unstressed kuai, written 快 (kuai) rather than the sharp fourth tone it carries alone in words like 快 (kuài, fast). This softening is common in everyday two-syllable adjectives.

凉快 (liángkuai) sits opposite 暖和 (nuǎnhuo, warm) on the comfortable side of the temperature scale, with 冷 (lěng, cold) and 热 (rè, hot) marking the uncomfortable extremes either side.
