炉子(lú zi) - cooker, stove, hob in Mandarin

炉子 (lúzi) is the cooker, stove or hob, the thing you actually cook on rather than the whole kitchen. 炉 (lú) on its own means "furnace, stove", and the 子 (zi) here is the common noun suffix, said in a light neutral tone rather than a full third tone.

It covers gas hobs, electric hobs and older-style stoves alike, so context usually tells you which. 火炉 (huǒlú) leans towards a heating stove rather than a cooking one, and 微波炉 (wéibōlú), "microwave", uses the same 炉 (lú) root, which is a handy pattern to notice: anything with a heating chamber tends to borrow this character.

Watch the tone on 子 (zi): plenty of learners default to a full third tone because that is the character's tone in isolation, but as a grammatical suffix on a noun it flattens to neutral, the same pattern you get in 脑子 (nǎozi), "brain", or 房子 (fángzi), "house".
