名片(míng piàn) - business card in Mandarin

名片 (míngpiàn) is a "business card" or "name card". 名 (míng) means "name" and 片 (piàn) means "a flat piece, a slip", so the compound is literally a "name slip".

In Chinese business culture, handing over a 名片 (míngpiàn) is a small ritual: it is offered and received with both hands, and glancing at it before pocketing it is considered polite. This matters more in Chinese speaking contexts than the equivalent gesture does in Britain, so it is worth knowing even at a basic vocabulary level.

The measure word is 张 (zhāng), the classifier for flat, thin objects like paper and cards: 一张名片 (yī zhāng míngpiàn), "a business card", never 一个名片 (yī gè míngpiàn).
