皮带(pí dài) - belt in Mandarin

皮带 (pídài) is a belt: 皮 (pí) means skin or leather, and 带 (dài) means a strip or band, so together they name the leather strip worn round the waist. Most belts really are leather, so the literal meaning still matches the object most of the time.

The verb is 系 (jì), to fasten or tie, used for belts, scarves and seatbelts alike: 系皮带 (jì pídài), to do up a belt. 穿 (chuān), the general word for wearing clothes, does not fit here.

The measure word is 条 (tiáo), the measure word for long thin things: 一条皮带 (yì tiáo pídài), one belt, the same measure word used for 领带 (lǐngdài), tie.
