上载(shàng zài) - to upload in Mandarin

上载 (shàngzài) means "to upload", the direct mirror of 下载 (xiàzài, to download): 上 (shàng, up) replaces 下 (xià, down) in front of the same 载 (zài, to load, to carry).

In everyday conversation 上传 (shàngchuán) is actually more common for "upload" than 上载 (shàngzài), but 上载 (shàngzài) is the technically precise term you will find in software manuals and IT vocabulary lists, and it keeps a neat symmetry with 下载 (xiàzài).

As with 下载 (xiàzài), the character 载 is read zài here (fourth tone, "to load, to carry"), not zǎi (third tone, "to record"); the source list behind this page originally carried the zǎi reading, which belongs to words like 记载 (jìzǎi, to record) rather than to the "load data" sense, so it has been corrected to zài to match 下载 (xiàzài).
