市场 (shì chǎng) 'market' joins 市 and 场. 市 (shì) means a market or city and originally pictured a place of trade. 场 (chǎng) means an open ground or arena and carries the earth radical 土, since such grounds were levelled earth. Together they name an open place for buying and selling, a marketplace. The traditional form is 市場.
