书包 (shūbāo) is the school bag or satchel a pupil carries books and equipment in. 书 (shū) means "book" and 包 (bāo) means "bag, parcel", so it is straightforwardly a "book bag".

It is the default word for a schoolchild's bag specifically, distinct from 包 (bāo) on its own, which just means "bag" in general, or 背包 (bèibāo), "backpack", a broader term that also covers hiking rucksacks. 背书包 (bēi shūbāo), "to carry a school bag on your back", is the usual way of describing putting one on.

The measure word is 个 (gè): 一个书包 (yí gè shūbāo), "one school bag".
