提起(tí qǐ) - to mention, to bring up, to lift up in Mandarin

提起 (tí qǐ) has a literal sense and a figurative one, and the figurative one is far commoner. Literally you 提起 a suitcase or a kettle, lifting it by the handle. Figuratively you 提起 a topic, which is to bring it up in conversation.

The frame 一提起 X，Y is worth learning whole. It means the moment X comes up, Y happens, and it is everywhere in speech: 一提起考试他就紧张. Note also that a negative 提起 usually wants 过 behind it, since you are denying it ever happened: 没提起过.

The trap is choosing between 提起 and 提到. 提到 is neutral reporting, "mentioned in passing", and takes what was said. 提起 has more weight behind it and often carries feeling, which is why 别提起 sounds like a warning while 别提到 sounds like an editing instruction. Do not use either for raising a hand, which is 举手.
