体育(tǐ yù) - PE in Mandarin

体育 (tǐyù) is PE, physical education, as a school subject, and more broadly "sport, athletics". 体 (tǐ) means "body" and 育 (yù) means "to nurture, to educate" (the same 育 in 教育 jiàoyù, education), so the compound is literally "body education".

体育课 (tǐyù kè), "PE lesson", is the phrase you will hear most; 体育馆 (tǐyùguǎn), "gymnasium, sports hall", and 体育场 (tǐyùchǎng), "stadium", extend the same root into the buildings where the subject happens.

Beyond the classroom, 体育 (tǐyù) is also the general word for "sport" in news and broadcasting: 体育新闻 (tǐyù xīnwén) is "sports news", and 体育比赛 (tǐyù bǐsài) is a "sporting competition", so the word does far more work than the narrow school-subject sense alone suggests.
