未婚(wèi hūn) - unmarried in Mandarin

未婚 (wèihūn) means "unmarried". 未 (wèi) is "not yet", a negator that implies something hasn't happened rather than won't (compare 没 méi, plain negation), and 婚 (hūn) means "marriage", from the same root as 结婚 (jiéhūn), "to get married", and 婚姻 (hūnyīn), "marriage" the institution.

The "not yet" nuance in 未 (wèi) is worth noticing: 未婚 (wèihūn) frames unmarried status as a stage someone is currently in, rather than a flat fact, which is why it sits comfortably on official forms next to 已婚 (yǐhūn), "married".

未婚妻 (wèihūnqī), "fiancee", and 未婚夫 (wèihūnfū), "fiance", both build on 未婚 (wèihūn) directly, adding 妻 (qī), "wife", or 夫 (fū), "husband", to name someone promised but not yet married.
