新加坡(xīn jiā pō) - Singapore in Mandarin

新加坡 (xīn jiā pō) is Singapore, the city-state in Southeast Asia. It is a phonetic transliteration built purely for its sound, using 新 (xīn, "new"), 加 (jiā, "add") and 坡 (pō, "slope"), none of which are meant to be read for meaning; the whole point is to approximate the English name "Singapore".

It is one of the largest Mandarin-speaking communities outside China: Mandarin is an official language alongside English, Malay and Tamil, and Singapore uses simplified characters, the same set as mainland China, which makes it and Malaysia the two Southeast Asian countries whose Chinese-language material learners of simplified script can read without adjustment.

People from there are 新加坡人 (xīn jiā pō rén), "Singaporean", and the local variety of Mandarin, known informally as 新加坡华语 (xīn jiā pō huáyǔ), has its own vocabulary quirks borrowed from Malay and Hokkien.
