艺术家 (yì shù jiā) is an artist: a painter, sculptor, musician, dancer or anyone whose work is treated as art rather than craft. The measure word is 位 when you want to be respectful and 个 when you do not.

The 家 on the end is the same suffix that builds 作家 (writer), 音乐家 (musician) and 科学家 (scientist). It does not mean house here. It marks someone recognised as an expert, which is why the word carries a hint of standing.

The trap is reaching for 艺术家 whenever English says artist. A person who paints as a hobby is 画画的 or 学画的, not 艺术家. Calling a beginner an 艺术家 sounds either flattering or sarcastic, and Mandarin speakers hear the difference immediately.
