有名(yǒu míng) - famous, well-known in Mandarin

有名 (yǒumíng) means famous or well-known, built literally from 有 (yǒu, "to have") and 名 (míng, "name"), so the underlying idea is "having a name" that other people recognise. It covers everything from a famous actor to a well-known local restaurant.

有名 (yǒumíng) is the everyday, conversational word for "famous"; 著名 (zhùmíng) is its more formal cousin, the one you would meet in a newspaper article or a textbook description of a historical figure. For chatting about a celebrity or a popular restaurant, 有名 (yǒumíng) is the natural choice.

It works the same way as other stative adjectives: 很有名 (hěn yǒumíng) is "very famous", and it can sit before a noun with 的 (de), as in 有名的作家 (yǒumíng de zuòjiā), "a famous writer".
