月亮 (yuè liang) is the moon you can point at. The second syllable is very often reduced in speech, so you will hear something close to yuè liang, and that is the normal pronunciation rather than sloppiness.
It carries a lot of cultural weight for a two-character noun. A full moon, 圆月 or 月亮很圆, stands for family reunion, which is why the Mid-Autumn Festival is built around looking at it. 赏月, moon-gazing, is a real activity with a real word.
The trap is 月 on its own. In dates and durations 月 means month, so 三月 is March and 三个月 is three months, never three moons. If you mean the thing in the sky in ordinary speech, say 月亮; the bare 月 in that sense is poetic, as in 月光 for moonlight.
