运行 (yùn xíng) is what machines, systems, software, trains and planets do. It describes something moving steadily along the course it was set on, and it is the standard verb on a status readout: 运行正常, 运行中, 停止运行.

It is mostly intransitive, with the thing doing the running as the subject: 程序在运行, 地铁正常运行. When you want to say that a person starts a program, the verb is 运行 used transitively in computing contexts, 运行这个程序, but 打开 is far commoner in speech.

Two traps. It is never used of a person running, which is 跑. And it is not the running of a business or a shop, which is 经营 or 管理. A restaurant that has been going for ten years 开了十年, it does not 运行.
