中秋节(zhōng qiū jié) - Mid-Autumn Festival in Mandarin

中秋节 (Zhōngqiūjié) is the Mid-Autumn Festival: 中 (zhōng) means "middle", 秋 (qiū) means "autumn" and 节 (jié) means "festival". It falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, when the moon is at its fullest and roundest of the year.

Families gather to eat 月饼 (yuèbǐng), "mooncakes", and to admire the full moon together, which is why 中秋节 (Zhōngqiūjié) is also known as 团圆节 (tuányuánjié), the "Reunion Festival": 团圆 (tuányuán) means "to reunite".

Unlike 春节 (Chūnjié), which shuts the whole country down for over a week, 中秋节 (Zhōngqiūjié) is typically a shorter break, but it carries just as much emotional weight, especially for anyone away from family.
