走廊(zǒu láng) - corridor, hallway in Mandarin

走廊 (zǒuláng) is the corridor or hallway, the long passage that connects rooms. 走 (zǒu) means "to walk" and 廊 (láng) means "a covered passage, a veranda", so the compound is close to "walking passage".

It is used for corridors in any building, not just schools: hospitals, flats and office blocks all have a 走廊 (zǒuláng). School rules almost always mention it: 不要在走廊里跑 (bú yào zài zǒuláng lǐ pǎo), "don't run in the corridor", is a stock instruction.

Because it describes something long and narrow, the measure word is 条 (tiáo): one corridor is 一条走廊 (yì tiáo zǒuláng), the same measure word used for roads and rivers.
