Russian Numbers to a Million: Hundreds, Thousands and Prices

By Michael McGettrickUpdated 11 October 2026

(a thousand) is a noun, not just a number, so it follows the same one / two-four / five-up rule as a noun after a number: , . Even the hundreds carry that rule inside them. This page builds on Russian numbers 1-100.

Quick check

Three quick questions on what you have just read. The full practice is further down.

Pick the right one

0/3

Which form of rouble follows the number?

  1. один

  2. три

  3. сто

The whole system on one screen

Each number group in its own colour, the same as on the 1-100 page:

onetwo to fourfive and upgenitive endingaccusative endingWhat do the colours mean?
CountHundredThousandMillion
1
2
3триста
5пятьсо́т

Read down any column and you hear the rule from the 1-100 page: nominative after one, genitive singular after two to four, genitive plural after five.

The hundreds

NumberRussianSay it
100sto
200DVYE-sti
300тристаTRI-sta
400четырестаchi-TY-ri-sta
500пятьсо́тpit-SOT
600шестьсотshis-SOT
700семьсотsim-SOT
800восемьсотva-sim-SOT
900девятьсотdi-vit-SOT

The endings echo the counting rule: -ста after three and four matches the genitive singular of (ста), and -сот after five is an old genitive plural. keeps an ending from the old dual, the form for pairs.

пятьсот: five takes the genitive plural of сто

Like the tens, the hundreds are joined largest first, with no and:

  • - a hundred and twenty-five
  • триста - three hundred and sixty-five days

Thousands are nouns

is a feminine noun, declined like , so it obeys the three groups itself, and because it is feminine:

RussianEnglish
1,000 roubles
2,000 roubles
5,000 roubles

Whatever a thousand counts goes into the genitive plural, however many thousands there are. And because it is a noun, it takes the case the sentence needs:

  • . - It costs a thousand roubles. (accusative, like )

turns up in formal writing, such as an amount written out in words on a cheque or a contract. In speech, alone is normal.

Millions and billions

is a masculine noun, declined like , and (a billion) works exactly the same way:

RussianEnglish
a million
two million
five million
  • . - There are a million people in the city.
  • . - It costs a million dollars.

Putting a big number together

Largest first, each part said in full. If a smaller number follows a thousand, the last word takes over the noun again:

NumberRussian
1,995 девятьсот
2,026
1,003

is one thousand and three days: the last word is , so . Years in a sentence become ordinals instead; see Russian dates and years.

Prices

The Russian currency is the (rouble), and it follows the rule like any masculine noun:

NumberRussianEnglish
1 one rouble
2-4 two roubles
5-20 five roubles
100 a hundred roubles
1,000 1,000 roubles
  • ? - How much is it?
  • . - A hundred and twenty roubles.

Numbers in the other cases

Everything above holds when the number phrase is the subject or a thing as the object. Elsewhere, the number and the noun decline together, and the three-group rule stops applying:

CaseExampleEnglish
instrumental .I'm going with two friends.
accusative, people .I can see two brothers.
genitive from five to six

With people or animals as the object, two to four copy the genitive plural: . Recognise these forms now; they take longer to learn.

Mistakes English speakers make

WrongRightWhy
is feminine
after five: genitive plural
a thousand counts in the gen. pl.
is an object: accusative
no and between the parts
