Russian Irregular Past Tense: шёл, мог, ел and the Stress Traps

By Michael McGettrickUpdated 11 October 2026

Almost every Russian verb forms its past by swapping -ть for -л, -ла, -ло, -ли, as the Russian past tense shows. The exceptions fall into three families of common verbs, plus a short list whose stress jumps in the feminine. Learn them as vocabulary; you will use them daily.

The ending is coloured by gender, as on the past-tense page; the changed stem is highlighted:

Consonant stems: no -л in the masculine

A verb whose past stem ends in a consonant (usually , г, , з, or р) drops the -л in the masculine only. The other forms are regular:

InfinitivehesheEnglish
мочьcould
помочьhelped
умеретьdied
принестиbrought
  • . - I couldn't come. (a man)
  • . - She helped me.

has ё in the masculine only: , but .

Идти and its family: a new stem in ш-

(to go on foot) borrows an old stem for its past. Nothing in predicts it:

идти: шёл (he), шла (she)

Every verb built on does the same:

InfinitivehesheEnglish
идтиwas going
прийтиcame
пойтиwent, set off
найтиfound
  • . - He was walking home.
  • . - She came late.
  • . - I found the key.

Есть: ел, ела, ели

(to eat) has a past stem of just е-:

  • ? - Have you eaten? (to a man)
  • . - We ate at home.

Do not confuse it with meaning there is, which takes , , in the past.

Stress: the part the spelling hides

Most verbs keep their stress in one place throughout the past. A short list of very common ones move it onto the ending in the feminine only:

Verbheshethey
бытьbylby-LABY-li
житьzhylzhy-LAZHY-li
датьdalda-LADA-li
понятьPO-nyalpa-nya-LAPO-nya-li
  • . (a-NA by-LA DO-ma) - She was at home.
  • . (a-NA zhy-LA v mask-VYE) - She lived in Moscow.

Negation makes it stranger. With , the takes the stress in every form except the feminine:

NYE by-lithey weren't

Say as one word with the weight on the first syllable:
