Ch 16 · Lesson 17

Up or down? Asking or agreeing

Voice down on the tag: you want the other person to agree. Voice up: you really want an answer. Plus same-way tags: So you're the new boss, are you?

The short version

Voice down: agree with me. Voice up: tell me

, ?

Your voice goes down. You can both see the sun; you want them to agree.
Why?

The same tag can do two jobs. If your voice goes down on the tag, you know the answer and want the other person to agree. If it goes up, you really don't know and want an answer. Small talk about the weather uses the down tag.

Small talk about the weather is the classic home of the down tag. You can both see the sky:

Four panels: a grinning sun over an ice cream for sunny and hot; a grey cloud with rain falling on a red umbrella for rainy; a white cloud, snowflakes and a snowman for snowy and cold; a puffing cloud blowing wind and leaves at a bending tree for windy.

  3. , ?
  4. windy, ?

Sunny: Lovely day, isn't it? Rainy: Terrible weather, isn't it? Snowy: It's cold, isn't it? Windy: It's windy, isn't it? In each one the voice goes down: you want the other person to agree.

In writing, nobody can hear your voice. So , ? in a message can sound like you think they didn't.
