Ch 29 · Lesson 17

My own, the very: emphasis on a noun

My own room: mine, and nobody else's. The very day I arrived: exactly that day. Own needs my or her in front, and never takes -s.

The short version

My own means nobody else's; the very means exactly

.

The car is hers: not shared, and not borrowed.
Why?

Own after my, her or their adds: not shared, not borrowed. It needs an owner word in front, so say my own room or a room of my own, never an own room. Before a noun, very means exactly this one and no other: the very day I arrived.
