It is scorn, not size. A o may be an enormous wretched house, while a is a small one and might be perfectly charming. -- measures, -- judges.

The line against - is worth drawing carefully. -- is aesthetic or practical contempt: an o simply teaches badly. - is a moral verdict: a o abuses the post. On verbs the same split holds, careless against wicked.
