From Latin amor ('love'), taken in as its own root rather than derived from ami. Latin used amor for love of every kind; Esperanto narrowed the borrowing to the physical sort and left the general sense to ami.

The seam here is false and it matters: is not plus a suffix, it is a separate root. and its noun cover love of a parent, a friend or a country, while is specifically erotic, so and are not interchangeable. The verb amori exists for the act itself.
