From Latin aranea, which meant both the spider and its web, and which is usually connected with Greek arakhne. That Greek word gives the zoologist's arachnid, so the spider and the class it belongs to reach English by two different routes.

Four syllables, one root, no joins. The - at the front is not the collective suffix --, which only ever comes after a root, and the in the middle is not the word for 'no'. Say it a-ra--o, with the stress on the second-to-last syllable as always. A web is o, the thing made of spider.
