Translation
donkey; ass, fool
Word origin
From Latin asinus ('donkey'). Dutch borrowed the same word as ezel, and a painter's ezel, the little beast that stands there holding a load, is where English got easel.
- Origin
- Latin
- Root
- asinus
- English cognates
- ass, asinine, easel
Examples
.
The donkey carried the bags to the village.
.
In the countryside we saw a donkey and two horses.
, !
Do not be a fool, listen to me!
No affix here, whatever the shape suggests: is not az- with -- on the end, because Esperanto has no -- suffix at all. The whole word is one borrowed root from Latin asinus. The insulting sense travelled with it, so calling somebody lands exactly as it does in English, and -- makes it worse rather than bigger.
