From Persian bāzār, a market, which travelled through Turkish and Italian into every European language. It is one of Esperanto's few roots of Iranian origin.

is the covered or open market where many sellers trade side by side - a souk, a market hall, a car boot sale, a charity bazaar. It contrasts with , a single shop with one owner, and with o, which is any place where selling happens and is deliberately vague.
There is a false seam waiting here for anybody who has met . is a base or foundation, from Greek basis, and is not plus the collective suffix --. If it were, it would mean "a set of foundations", which is not a thing anybody needs a word for. The two roots simply arrived from different continents and landed on the same three letters. - is one indivisible root of Persian ancestry.
The English "bazaar" for a church fundraiser is available in Esperanto too, and bonfara is the ordinary phrase for it.
