Translation

bench

Word origin

From German Bank and the same Germanic word that gave English bench. The money sense travelled separately through Italian banca, the moneychanger's counter, which is why Esperanto keeps banko for that and benko for the seat.

Origin
Germanic
Root
bank
English cognates
bench, bank

Examples

.

We sat on the bench in the park.

.

The bench is made of wood.

.

An old man slept on the bench beside the garden.

Watch the vowel: is the seat, is the bank. They are the same Germanic word historically, split by the route each took into the language, and Esperanto keeps them a single letter apart. A seats one person; a seats several and usually has no back.
