and overlap, but they are not the same word. is the inner quality: you feel the fear and go anyway. is the outward, slightly old-fashioned praise you give a soldier, a sailor or a horse - gallant, fine, stout-hearted. It carries a whiff of the nineteenth-century novel, which is exactly where most of its corpus hits come from. The root gives you o for gallantry and brave for the adverb. Do not reach for it when you mean the everyday courage of asking a difficult question; does that job better.
