From French cerise, from Vulgar Latin ceresia and Greek kerasos, the cherry tree. English got cherry from the Norman French cherise, which sounded like a plural, so the s was dropped and a singular invented.

One is one cherry, the fruit. The tree is ĉerizarbo or o, using the -- suffix in its 'thing that bears' sense, which is the same suffix that used to make country names.
Mind the hat: ĉ is the ch of church, so the word starts exactly like the English one and then goes its own way, che-REE-zo.
