Two traps sit on this word, and both catch people who already know a European language.

The first is dato against datumo. A dato is a calendar day and nothing else. Computer data is datumoj, or in older and more technical usage datenoj, and the singular datumo is one piece of information. They come from the same Latin datum, "a thing given", but Esperanto split them deliberately and keeps them apart, so la datoj de la esploro are the dates of the research while la datumoj de la esploro are its findings. Say the wrong one and you will be understood as saying the wrong thing, not merely as speaking oddly.

The second is the fruit. The date you eat is daktilo, from Greek daktulos, a finger, because that is what the fruit looks like. It shares nothing with dato beyond an accident of English. And the verb is dati, "to date" in the sense of putting a date on something: letero datita la kvinan de majo.
