Three pieces, and this one really does come apart. - is the prefix for scattering in all directions - i to distribute, i to disperse, i to smash to bits. Koni is to know in the sense of being acquainted with something. -- makes a causative: to cause the state named by the root. Put them together and is to cause something to be known in all directions, which is a rather better description of publicity than the English word manages.

Note where the -- sits, because it is doing real work.Koni is what you do; i is to make something known to somebody; is to make it known everywhere. The igi and iĝi article is the place to get this straight, and the short version is that -- pushes the action outwards onto an object while -- turns it inwards: is what the news itself does when it gets around, with nobody pushing. - the news spread. - we spread it.

Against the neighbours. Sciigi is to inform, and it points at a particular person: you somebody of something. Anonci is to announce, a single formal act at a moment in time. Eldoni is to publish in the publisher's sense, to issue a book or a paper. is broader and slower than any of them: it is the campaign rather than the announcement, which is why it is the verb the Esperanto movement uses about itself more than almost any other. o is the ongoing effort, and it turns up in association minutes constantly.
