faŝisto

A faŝisto is an adherent of faŝismo, and the pair is a clean example of the ordinary Esperanto machinery: -ismo names a doctrine, -isto names the person who holds it. Komunismo and komunisto, socialismo and socialisto, faŝismo and faŝisto. Nothing about the derivation is special.

The root is Italian fascio, a bundle or a league, from Latin fascis. The fasces of the Roman republic were a bundle of wooden rods tied round an axe and carried in front of a magistrate: the rods for beating, the axe for beheading, and the binding for the idea that a single stick snaps while a bundle does not. Mussolini's movement took the emblem and the name in 1919 and both crossed into every European language inside a decade.

You will meet the word mainly in history books, and Esperanto's own history runs straight through the period. Esperanto organisations were banned in Germany in 1936, and a fair amount of the literature you will eventually read was written by people who had to leave somewhere in a hurry. That is context for the vocabulary rather than an argument, and this page offers no more than that.
