covers the physical side of a thing and the figurative side of an argument, exactly as English does. The adverb flanke means beside or off to one side, and flanken with the accusative of direction means sideways, which is how you say a movement rather than a position. Flanke works as a compound preposition for beside. The adjective flanka gives you side roads and side effects without a new root, and is the fixed phrase for "for my part".
