is a bachelor and the female form, built with the usual -in-. The pair is a fossil of a politer age, and the language has quietly moved on: most modern Esperantists say to any adult woman regardless of marital status, exactly as English gave up on Miss in favour of Ms. You will meet constantly in the classics and in nineteenth-century translations. Reading it is one thing; addressing a stranger with it is a decision, not a default.
