Learn the verb alongside the adjective, because is used constantly: is the everyday "never mind, it does not matter", and ? is "what does it matter?". The rest of the family is predictable, with o for importance and a for trivial. One false friend to sidestep: English "grave" as a noun, the hole in the ground, is and has no connection to this root. only ever means weighty in the sense of mattering.
