The object of is the person, not the news: , never the other way round. That is the same shape as English "inform" and the opposite of "tell", which explains why speakers slide between the two and land wrong. Esperanto also has the home-built , literally to cause to know, which does the identical job with a native root - , and note that here the person takes . The derivations are obvious: informo, o, o.
