Built inside Esperanto from komputi (to compute, from Latin computare) plus the tool suffix -il-: the computing tool. Coined in the twentieth century when the machine arrived, from parts Zamenhof laid down in 1887.

The proudest exhibit in the affix museum: when the computer arrived, Esperanto did not borrow "computer", it assembled from komputi and --, the same suffix that builds (key) and (vehicle). A laptop is a tekokomputilo (briefcase computer) and a tablet a tabulkomputilo. You work (at it) and do things per it, with the usual instrument preposition.
