English "poor" does two unrelated jobs, and Esperanto splits them cleanly. is only ever about money: no wealth, empty pockets. The pitying "poor thing" is , literally worthy of compassion. So is a boy without money and is a boy you feel sorry for, and mixing them up changes the sentence. The root behaves as you would expect: o is poverty, o a poor person, i to become poor. Nothing here needs memorising beyond the - you already know.
