Esperanto draws a line English blurs: an is a tool your hand drives, a runs on its own power. The word compounds happily, always with the machine last: lavmaŝino washes, kudromaŝino sews, skribmaŝino is the typewriter your grandmother had. Machine-like behaviour is maŝina, and maŝine describes doing something mechanically, without thought, the exact opposite of how you should conjugate your verbs.
