car
Word origin
A clipped international borrowing of automobile, itself built from Greek autos ('self') and Latin mobilis ('moving'). The full form aŭtomobilo also exists but everyday Esperanto says aŭto, exactly as English says car.
- Origin
- Greek and Latin, via international automobile
- Root
- autos + mobilis
- English cognates
- automobile, automatic
Examples
.
My father has a new car.
.
We travelled to the town by car.
.
The car is fast but old.
is the everyday word; survives in formal prose the way motorcar does in English. You go somewhere per or, using the verb the root grew, aŭte. Note the diphthong: is one syllable, so the word has two, not three.
