From Latin minimum, the neuter of minimus ('smallest'), the superlative that goes with minus ('less'). Esperanto took the finished Latin superlative rather than building one.

Examples
.
We need a minimum of time to finish.
.
The price stayed at the minimum.
.
He sleeps only the minimum and works all day.
The last two letters are a coincidence and a good one to notice. does not contain the wildcard suffix -um-, the one that makes out of : the -um here is the Latin neuter ending, arriving inside a word Esperanto borrowed whole. There is no root minim- to hang a suffix on.
In practice you will more often say it with the ordinary machinery: for "at least", or for the smallest. Minimuma is the adjective, as in minimuma .
