level
Word origin
From French niveau, earlier nivel, from a Vulgar Latin libellus, a little balance, the diminutive of libra meaning scales. The first l dissimilated to n, which is why the modern word begins with the wrong letter.

runs from the literal to the figurative just as level does in English: the water level, the floor level, the level of a learner's Esperanto. The builder's tool with the bubble in it is a o, and to bring two surfaces to the same height is niveli or, more usually, i.
